This is my main journal although I have two other journals regarding my volunteering experiences in Australia and Nicaragua. My posts are friends only, some are solely private.
I'm a 28 year old ex-vegan, Sagittarian monkey, Scottish lassie who has led a pretty full life up until this point and the plan is for that to continue until the day I pass on. I had to give up my veganism to live in Nicaragua but I plan to return to my old ways... just not be so strict about it! I am passionate about life, culture, spirituality, development and so many other things that I can exhaust myself! I aspire to stay as open-mided as possible about everything so I am constantly learning about new ideas and ways of living. At times I feel I can be a tad un-Western as I don't believe specialisation in one field promotes self-development and the world would be a more educated and understanding place if we all tried new things and developed our right brain as much as we do our left! Yet I love the fact that I am a Western woman who can comparatively express my individuality without recrimination.
My ethos is to live in balance, not only within myself, but within my environment which includes the people I come into contact with and the world that I live in. Above all else, I try to stay true to who I am as a person, yet remain open-minded to know that I will change through time and to develop accordingly. I love to meet new people and to hear their life stories and how we can influence each other. I am fun-loving, yet common-sensical; manic yet pragmatic; self-orientated yet devoted to helping the lives of others... I wrestle with this balance yet as the years go on it all seems to make more sense within me, making a complete 3D person and not a caricature.
I would regard myself as the quintessential eternal student as I studied full-time at University for over 7 years in the Social Sciences including Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy, Anthropology, Social Research and Community Education. I also have my Teaching English certificate and I have learned Spanish to Pre-Advanced/Advanced level. I know that one day I will return to University but my path now is to travel and to develop my own skills at a grassroots level. I returned from Nicaragua at the beginning of April 2009 and I have completely fallen in love with it. My aim is to make it back there, work as an English teacher until I get my Spanish near fluency, and then undertake community development work on a full-time basis.
Life is both for the living and the learning. I shake my head in dismay at the worldwide atrocities that occur on an everyday basis, yet I am truly thankful that I am alive and that I have a role to play in making this world a better place. Travelling and meeting new people from different cultures refreshes me as, although I love Scotland with all my heart, I can get bogged down with the dominant Scottish viewpoint on life and I need to break free every now and then. Bring on my return to Nicaragua!!!
If you think I sound like a cool gal then please add me as a friend! Only through communication and education (not strictly in the formal sense) can we all progress and live our lives to the fullest!
